Fort McClellan Jan 22 1943

Bill is making it through Basic Training and is now at Fort McClellan Alabama. He still likes the Army !! He talk about how much they have to work. Up early at 0500 and exercise until 1200 then they walk until 6 PM. He had a tough time and seems to have thought he wouldn’t make it but he did. The packs weight 60 pounds. He talks about his rifle and how fine it is. Funny he wishes Reba (my mother) was there to wash his feet in hot water. I find it interesting that he enjoys Kitchen Police (K.P.) the best because all he has to do is wash dishes. I guess that beats marching all day. He has lost weight from all the work and is starting to be skinny like his brother Carroll. He loves getting letters from his mother and reminds her to write more often. He asks his brother to send him his pipe and filters and I think he wants matches as they seem to be in short supply. Sounds like Army life keeps him busy shinning shoes, scrubbing floors and cleaning his rifle. It must have been tough as he is determined to make it through to the end of training as he tells his Daddy that it is hell but he will make it.
